How to Successfully Set Goals

How to Successfully Set Goals

It has been said the “Genius” is the “ability to focus on just one thing at a time.” In fact many who are called geniuses by their admirers are considered to be so mainly because they have the gift of being able to focus purely on the task at hand.

The war time code breakers were often considered mathematical geniuses because of solving apparently impossible cipher codes. There gift was the ability to concentrate and keep working away at that problem until it was solved.

This dogged determination, this one-track-mind in many other areas of life would be considered fanatical, but because it is focused on achieving a desired goal, it because a great asset.

This same determined focus must come in to play when selecting what your goals are in relation to success. When you learn to work towards a main objective and see all other short-range and mid-range goals only in their relationship to the main goal, you become successful almost automatically.

The best way to ensure that you are selecting correct goals for your life is to do a life-goal check-up.

I suggest listing 7 categories:
Economic, Work, Family,
Personal, Spiritual, Mental
and Physical.

Compare your main goal with these categories and every now and then check how you’re doing.

This will help you to see clearly where you are and the direction that you are going in.

1) Set reasonable goals. Big goals must be broken down in to manageable pieces. Don’t set more than 4 goals to work on during a single day.

2) Decide on a reward for achieving your goal. Unclear rewards don’t motivate people to achieve very much, and that includes you!

3) List the obstacles that stand between you and your goals. If you’re not aware of potential problems, you’ll be side-tracked when they arise and lose sight of your objective.

4) Have someone in your corner who can dispense counsel & guidance. If your family is not “behind” you then seek out some encouragement and help from forums that focus on your project.

5) Think about who can help you achieve your goal. Identify friends who can be encouragers and who can help keep you motivated and on-track.

6) Do not discuss your project with negative people or those that don’t understand and are not interested in your project.

7) Develop a plan of action to achieve your goal

8) Set a deadline for achievement. It’s hard to achieve something that has no ending date.

When you are setting goals and checking your direction in life, you should ask the following questions about each goal.

Is this plan of action morally right and fair to everyone involved?

Will this goal get me closer to my ultimate goal?

Can I really commit myself to start and accomplish this objective?

Can I see myself attaining this goal?

You should find that you can easily answer yes to the above questions, but if you can not, then you really need to reconsider your plan.

There is a final “am I on track” set of questions that you should also ask yourself – these are whole-life benefit questions.

Will the outcome make me happier?

Will my health improve (or deteriorate) ?

Will this course make me wealthier?

How will it effect my future security?

What is the impact on my friendships?

Will it give me peace of mind?

How will family relationships be effected?

If any of these questions causes you doubt, then a re-evaluation is in order.
Many people waste a good chunk of their lives chasing after goals that are not harmonious with their real life wants. This makes them frustrated and unhappy.

So evaluate your goals well, stay determined and become that genius!
