Website Design:

The Importance of Simplicity

The Importance of Simplicity

It has to be said that the majority of web designs are far too complicated.

For some reason we have a natural urge to complicate our lives. We want to have the latest electronic gadgets and the most advanced technology in our cars.

That is great for areas of our lives that are part entertainment but when it comes to web design it is not particularly beneficial.

The majority of internet users do not have time to waste. Usually they are visiting a web page becasue they are searching for something in particular.

What does this mean? It means that they really don't have time for a complicated website, they want to find what they want in the shortest possible time and then get on with the next task. (Or get back to their video game!)

The above statement is supported by numerous surveys that repeatedly show that people surfing the internet, on average, spend less than ten seconds on a website.

So what type of design is going to catch their eye? A flashy graphic laden site with text boxes all over it, using every square centimeter that they can?
Or perhaps a simple clean design?

Maybe it not too surprising that Google is one of the most successful web designs in the world. It is clean and simple. This is a good example that shows that the back end of the web site needs to be simple.

You can have an extremely complex content management system sitting behind you nice simple page design.

Of course simple can mean different things to different web designers. Where do we start when putting together a simple and effective web design?

Navigation, your fancy graphic with mapped hot spots may seem cool to you, but to the first time visitor, a simple left hand side vertical or horizontal top navigation would be much preferred.

Keep your web site design simple and you are going to impress busy people who are short of patience and time. Why not try the simplest web design that you can put together. Possibly that will work the best.
